A few minutes later Seth pulled the truck through the T Bar K entrance and accelerated the truck up the winding dirt road that led to the house. Corrina was so surprised, she stared at him with wide eyes.

“We’re going back to your ranch.” She stated the obvious.

“That’s right. Disappointed?”

She glanced around her. The sparkling river was on one side of the road, while on the other, small green meadows dotted with evergreens were full of fat, grazing Angus cattle. No matter how many times a person saw this ranch, it would always be beautiful, she thought.

“I—well, no,” she answered him. “Just surprised, that’s all.”

He reached over and squeezed her hand. “I decided to do something special this evening. If you don’t like it, we’ll drive into Aztec and eat. All you have to do is tell me.”

Corrina swallowed as a lump of emotion filled her throat. No man had ever been so thoughtful or considerate to her. And no man had ever made her heart turn over with just the touch of his hand.

Oh God, help me, she prayed. I’m falling in love with this man. With each passing minute, she could feel her heart going out to him, feel her senses falling deeper and deeper under his spell.

“I’m sure it will be very nice,” she murmured.

When they reached the ranch house, Seth drove around to the back and helped her out of the truck. Once on the ground, she expected the two of them to walk to the back porch and enter the kitchen. Instead, he took her by the hand and led her around to the side of the house that was built adjacent to a rocky bluff. There in the yard, beneath two tall pines was a small table draped with a lacy cloth and set for two.

“Oh my!” Corrina exclaimed on sight of it.

Seth paused as he studied her reaction to the intimate setting. “What do you think? I’d hoped you might enjoy eating outside.”

She looked up at him and he could see her eyes were sparkling in the waning sunset. “It’s…just wonderful,” she said, her expression clearly amazed. “But you shouldn’t have gone to so much trouble, Seth!”

Her appreciation filled him with pleasure and mellowed his voice to a soft drawl. “Not at all,” he said and urged her toward the table.

He took care in seating her, and after she was settled he quickly lit the cluster of candles sitting in the middle of the table, then moved beyond the table to light a couple of torches that would keep the insects away.

“Comfortable?” he asked.

She smiled at him while thinking she felt like a princess being courted by a gallant knight. It was a feeling she’d never experienced before and it almost made her giddy.

“Very,” she said.

“Good. You sit right there and I’ll go get our supper.”

Before he could walk away, she asked, “Marina won’t be serving us?”

He glanced over his shoulder at her and a wicked smile crinkled the corners of his hazel eyes.
